The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has agreed to give the state land in front of Fire Station 29, east of Canton, for a proposed widening of Ga. 20.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is seeking additional right-of-way to widen Ga. 20 from two to six lanes from Scott to Union Hill roads, according to staff report to commissioners.

At the fire station, the state “will be reconstructing a portion of the existing driveway 30 feet in width and installing curb, gutter and sidewalk across the entire parcel frontage,” staff said. “They will also be modifying the existing raised median across the parcel frontage so that it is flush concrete for fire trucks to cross.”

GDOT valued the land acquisition at $55,000 and the replacement of a sign and associated landscaping at $3,000. Cherokee commissioners agreed to grant the right-of-way at no cost to the state, and to accept $3,000 as compensation for the sign and landscaping.

Cherokee Fire & Emergency Services opened Station 29, a volunteer station, in May 2016 to serve the Governors Preserve area and close a gap of more than five miles from the nearest fire house, according to a fire department web page.

The Scott-to-Union Hill widening is part of a bigger GDOT project to widen Ga. 20 from Canton to Cumming. Information: https://bit.ly/2gFjpab
