The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved spending $28,300 to buy 20 new semi-automatic rifles for the Uniform Patrol and Court Services divisions of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Daniel Defense Inc. of Black Creek, Ga., submitted the lowest of three bids for the rifles, which will replace firearms being retired due to age, according to a staff report to commissioners. Daniel, the manufacturer of the guns, submitted a quote of $1,415 for each DDM4 MK 18 SBR rifle.

In other law enforcement matters, commissioners approved a budget amendment to accept a $10,546 federal grant out of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. The sheriff’s office plans to use the funds to purchase Tasers, staff said. No county match is required.
