When the call comes in for the rescue of hundreds of dogs or cats from an overwhelmed resident, Cherokee County wants to be ready.

The County Board of Commissioners accepted a low bid of $47,723.50 from Jackson Creek Manufacturing of Denton, N.C., to provide what staff described as “a mini animal shelter on wheels.” The trailer will be used “for pet hoarding cases where hundreds of animals are being rescued,” and also for off-site pet adoption events, according to the agenda item from Tuesday’s board meeting.

The Cherokee County Animal Shelter has been collecting donations from citizens and businesses to buy the emergency rescue trailer. The 8-by-24-foot aluminum vehicle will have an examination table, 38 stainless-steel animal compartments expandable to 43, a sink, a 30-gallon water tank, an electric generator, lighting, heating, air conditioning, drains, a wastewater tank, and a restroom.

The county rescued nearly 130 cats from a Canton home in July, and more than 350 dogs from a suspected puppy mill near Cumming in July 2014.
