The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $154,000 contract with GTG Traffic Signals LLC to install traffic lights at the intersection of Sixes Road and Wellstar Way near Holly Springs.

A traffic signal had been proposed at the intersection in 2006 during the construction of Sixes Road, but because of the recession, development on Wellstar didn’t happen and the signal installation was taken down, according to a staff report to commissioners.

The county had hoped to use the signal pole foundations in place, but they were found to have been damaged, staff said. Also, the pole configuration was updated to use flashing yellow signals at this location. The existing foundations will have to be replaced, resulting in costs $19,000 higher than previously budgeted.

Funds will be moved from the county’s bridge and sidewalk fund to cover the additional cost.
