A public hearing on a proposed ordinance allowing golf carts on certain Cherokee County streets has been called by the Cherokee Board of Commissioners.
The hearing is set for 6 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Cherokee County Administration Building, 1130 Bluffs Parkway, Canton. Some residents have asked to be allowed to operate golf carts with regular traffic in their neighborhoods. Copies of the draft ordinance can be obtained by contacting the County Clerk’s Office, 678-493-6000.
According to the ordinance, the county could create “motorized cart districts” in unincorporated areas upon request by the majority of residents living there.
Among the law’s provisions: Golf carts could travel no faster than 20 mph, use sidewalks or operate after 10 p.m. An operator would have to have a valid driver’s license and be at least 16 years old. Owners would have to be insured and carts, equipped with such safety features as lights, brakes, mirrors, turn signals, seat belt hip restraints, a back-up warning system and a horn.
