Cherokee County will seek two federal grants exceeding $45,000 total to reimburse the county’s costs responding to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The Board of Commissioners approved applying for a $33,157 grant for the Sheriff’s Office out of the Coronavirus Emergency Supplemental Funding Program. The money can be used for overtime, equipment, hiring, supplies, training/travel and addressing the medical needs of jail inmates as a result of the virus, staff said in a report to commissioners.

Commissioners also approved applying for an $11,940 grant from the Criminal Justice Coordinating Council. The District Attorney requested the funds to pay for six Dell laptop computers and docking stations so county advocates can work from home during the current pandemic and in future emergencies.

Neither grant requires a local match, staff said.
