Cherokee County Schools celebrated the opening of their third food pantry in partnership with MUST Ministries, with students and staff cutting a ribbon Thursday morning at Cherokee High School in Canton.

Each week, 27 families in need will receive a backpack of non-perishable food and household products at no charge, officials said. Information: https://bit.ly/373vw7B

Cherokee High’s pantry, a converted supply room given up by the school PTA, is unique in that it was proposed by student leaders, Principal Todd Miller said. The students are participants of the Chick-fil-A Leadership Academy; representatives of the restaurant chain joined the ribbon-cutting.

“These kids have a heart for service, for kids in this community and for the needs in this community,” Miller said. “This project has taught these kids to be even more grateful for what they have. This is just the beginning.”

Students now are working on a “care center” that will include the food pantry; an expanded clothes closet; and a school garden to provide fresh food for families.

The school district and MUST Ministries also have food pantries at Hasty Elementary School Fine Arts Academy, Canton, and Oak Grove Elementary School Fine Arts Academy in southwest Cherokee County.
