Cherokee County has increased the number of county employees eligible for hazardous duty pay because of their risk of exposure to the COVID-19 virus.

The Board of Commissioners approved hazard pay of $250 a month, from March 25 through June 30, for 37 full-time and 13 part-time employees who have regularly recurring public contact. These workers include drivers, building inspectors, senior center employees and deputy coroners. The extra pay will cost the county about $47,188.

“This is more a thank-you than anything else; nobody will get rich off of this,” County Board Chairman Harry Johnston said.

Earlier in April, commissioners approved temporary hazard pay of $250 and $500 a month, depending on the level of risk, for front-line public safety members of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, Fire & Emergency Services and Marshal’s Office.
