Cherokee County is working with the Cherokee County School District to open a third summer camp site, in Woodstock.

County commissioners approved a $47,250 amendment to the Cherokee Recreation & Parks Agency programs budget to cover the costs of a camp at Carmel Elementary School, 2275 Bascomb Carmel Road.

The amount will pay such expenses as the costs of leasing the facility from the school district, additional part-time staff, supplies, transportation and field trips, according to a staff report to commissioners.

“Our popular Adventures Express summer camp program is currently offered at the (Cherokee County) recreation center and Hickory Flat Elementary,” staff said. “Registration typically fills up within just a few days after it opens each year.”

The new camp, staff said, “will better serve residents in that area and create additional spots for those on waiting lists.”
