A Canton man died Wednesday after a head-on collision that shut down a major east-west artery across the northern suburbs for two hours during the morning commute.

Joshua Goforth, 29, of Canton, died at North Fulton Hospital from injuries received in the collision, Cherokee County sheriff's Lt.  Jay Baker said.

He said preliminary indications were that Goforth crossed the center line on Cumming Highway and struck an oncoming vehicle driven by Laura Florey, 38, of Cumming.

The crash happened shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday on Ga. 20 at Water Tank Road.

Florey sustained minor injuries and was taken to North Fulton Hospital, where she remained in stable condition Wednesday afternoon.

There were no passengers in either vehicle, Baker said.
