Cherokee County will pay $1.16 million to Georgia Power for about 9.8 acres in Canton for a future county Roads and Bridges division facility to store equipment, trucks and supplies.

The Cherokee Board of Commissioners approved buying the Georgia Power service center and truck and equipment storage yard at 1037 Marietta Highway.

The county will let the electric utility lease back the property for $1 a month for two years before it exits the property, according to a staff report. The utility also was granted an easement to access an existing communications tower on the site. Roads and Bridges would occupy the property after Georgia Power leaves.

Given the $1.16 million purchase price and about $840,000 to renovate the facility, the acquisition represents “significant savings” compared with an estimate of up to $8 million to build a new Roads and Bridges facility on land Cherokee currently owns, County Manager Jerry Cooper told commissioners.
