The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners has approved a $62,000 budget amendment for its Recreation and Parks Department summer camp program to accommodate the growing numbers of children attending the camps.
“We have worked with the Cherokee County School District to add one new location for Adventures Express (Hickory Flat Elementary School) and move the KAOS program from the Recreation Center to Woodstock Elementary, allowing more participants,” Recreation and Parks Director Bryan Reynolds said in a report to commissioners.
Last summer, Cherokee’s regular camp, Adventures Express, and special needs program, KAOS Camp, “filled up within just a few hours of registration opening,” Reynolds said.
Within days, the programs had waiting lists averaging 45 youngsters a week for Adventures Express and 15 for KAOS camp. The camps met at the Recreation Center, with limited space for expansion.
The budget amendment covers hiring additional seasonal employees and general supplies. Personnel costs will be covered by program fees paid by campers.
