A family is seeking answers from the Cobb County Police Department after a pursuit of two criminal suspects ended in a crash that sent innocent members of a Smyrna household to the hospital, Channel 2 Action News reports.
“It’s very depressing to know what happened,” Leonard Webster told Channel 2 Monday.
The incident began shortly before 11 p.m. Friday when Smyrna police reported an armed robbery at a Captain D’s on South Cobb Drive.
Cobb officers spotted a 2005 Chevrolet Suburban whose tag number came back stolen. They tried to stop the SUV, but the vehicle sped away. The vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic on Windy Hill Road and slammed head-on into a Ford Explorer driven by Lealyson Webster.
The woman was rushed to Kennestone Hospital in Marietta. Family members told Channel 2 that she has been in the intensive care unit, largely unresponsive, since the wreck.
Two of Leonard and Lealyson Webster’s teenage sons also were hurt.
The father said one of them, an aspiring athlete, sustained serious leg and internal injuries. And immediately after the crash, he said, “they had guns pulled on them. … (It) sounds unfair.”
Cobb police acknowledged they briefly held everyone at gunpoint at the accident scene until they could sort everything out. Police told Channel 2 that the case will be reviewed by the department.
The two suspects in the pursuit, Rodney B. Lofton, 20, of Marietta and Deontae Conway, 17, of Dallas are being held without bond in Cobb County Adult Detention Center on multiple charges of armed robbery, aggravated assault and burglary.
The pair is suspected in a number of recent armed robberies of fast-food restaurants.
