Strong thunderstorms dumped heavy rain in parts of metro Atlanta Wednesday evening and early Thursday, and forecasters are predicting the possibility of another round of storms Thursday.

The National Weather Service said scattered thunderstorms are likely Thursday afternoon and evening across most of north and central Georgia. A few of the storms could be severe, with strong winds, large hail and lightning, the Weather Service said.

At 2 p.m. Thursday, Weather Service radar showed a cluster of strong storms building over Haralson County in far west Georgia, and another area of nearly stationary storms to the south of the there in Heard County.

Muscogee and Chattahoochee counties near Columbus were under a severe thunderstorm warning just before 3 p.m.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton put the chance of storms at 30 percent, followed by sunny skies Friday through Monday. Highs will be in the mid-80s, with lows in the low to mid-60s.

Overnight rainfall totals included .84 inch that fell between 8 and 9 p.m. at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport and .92 inch that fell between 1 and 2 a.m. Thursday at Fulton County Airport-Brown Field.

Other overnight totals included .25 inch in Chamblee and .54 inch in Dunwoody.

In the northeast corner of the state, a flash flood warning was posted for Stephens County around 7:30 a.m. Thursday after strong storms dumped more than 2 inches of rain in the area.
