A tropical low pressure system currently in the Gulf of Mexico will combine with a cold front approaching from the northwest to bring a good chance of rain and thunderstorms to metro Atlanta Thursday and Friday.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said some forecast models are predicting as much as 3 to 4 inches of rain across parts of Georgia.

The ultimate track of the low, which forecasters said is expected to move into southeast or central Georgia late Thursday and Friday, will play a big part in the rainfall totals.

“It really depends on where that low goes,” Minton said.

Minton said metro Atlanta’s rain chance will go up from 30 percent Wednesday to 60 percent on Thursday and Friday before diminishing to 20 percent over the weekend.

Highs will be around 83 degrees Wednesday and 80 Thursday and Friday, then climb back into the mid-80s Saturday and Sunday. Overnight lows through the period will be in the mid- to upper 60s.

Atlanta’s high Tuesday of 89 matched the highest temperature so far this spring.

Any late-week rain will add to the city’s rainfall surplus of the year, which currently stands at 6.95 inches.
