Chamblee police on Friday identified the homeless man who was fatally shot this week as 42-year-old Ramon Rojas.
Investigators are hoping surveillance footage will help identify the person responsible for shooting and killing Rojas early Wednesday.
A 911 caller told police she witnessed the shooting and knew the victim because the two were homeless, Chamblee police Chief Marc Johnson said. The woman told police she and Rojas were sitting in front of a business in the 3200 block of Chamblee Dunwoody Road when they were approached by another man, Johnson said.
The two men argued and the suspect pulled out a semiautomatic handgun, police said.
"He threatened to shoot the victim and then fired one shot striking the victim in the forehead killing him," Johnson said in a statement.
The woman told police the suspect tried to shoot her, but the gun malfunctioned and she ran. Around 5:40 a.m., officers found Rojas, who died at the scene.
A video camera at one of the businesses captured the incident, and investigators are working to identify the suspect, Johnson said. The video footage matches the information the witness provided to police, he said.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Chamblee police at 770-986-5005.
