DeKalb County saved $7 million in 2010 by using volunteer workers, CEO Burrell Ellis announced Thursday.

Ellis said volunteers contributed 340,064 hours of work, including cleaning up trash, stacking books at libraries and coaching youth sports.

DeKalb came up with the estimate by assuming each volunteer hour is worth about $19.85, county officials said.

The biggest savings came from volunteers at senior centers, which worked more than 100,000 hours, officials said.
