A Patti Faye deodar cedar will be planted 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at Milton’s Broadwell Pavilion to replace two diseased white oak trees that had to be removed in the fall. The new tree will be part of the annual holiday celebration.
“Preserving and growing our green canopy plays a key role in retaining Milton’s unique look and feel,” said Milton Mayor Joe Lockwood. “We’re also excited this beautiful cedar and its Broadwell Pavilion location will now serve as the permanent home for Milton’s annual Christmas tree lighting event.”
Milton will pay Ruppert Landscape Inc. $4,680 to install the cedar and make two follow-up inspections at six-month intervals, according to the city’s contract with the landscape firm.
The deodar cedar is a blue-needled, heat-tolerant evergreen suitable for planting in the South. Purchased from a Hawkinsville tree farm, the tree currently measures 24 feet tall and will stand about 50 feet tall at full maturity. City staff has prepared the planting area by installing a small retaining wall.
Broadwell Pavilion, at 12615 Broadwell Road, is a Milton Parks and Recreation Department facility with a 42-by-50-foot open pavilion with a large stone fireplace, restrooms and storage.
