Canton weighs changes to local fireworks laws
Fireworks sales from the back of a truck or a tent would be barred, and the hours when fireworks can be set off would be clarified, under a pair of ordinance amendments pending before the Canton City Council.
The measures were on the agenda for discussion and first readings at Thursday’s Council meeting.
One would ban fireworks sales from any motor vehicle, towed trailer or “tent, canopy or membrane structure.” Another would state that fireworks can be used from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. any day of the year, and extends those hours to 11:59 p.m. Jan. 1, July 3, July 4 and Dec. 31, and from midnight to 1 a.m. Jan. 1.
The term “fireworks” does not apply to model rockets, toy pistol caps, sparklers, “snakes,” party poppers and similar devices; or to ammunition used for sporting and hunting purposes, according to one of the ordinances.
State legislation passed this spring allowed local governments to extend state-mandated limits on when fireworks can be used.
