Canton sees end of glass recycling

Canton residents are on notice they can no longer put glass with their curbside recyclables as of July 1.

A May 19 letter from Waste Management, Canton’s contracted residential waste hauler, tells of the change in its curbside and commercial recycling programs. Waste Management’s secondary processor, Strategic Materials – the only glass processor in metro Atlanta – will stop taking glass from single-stream recycling programs, according to communications between the trash hauler and city.

“Most all metro Atlanta-area recycling facilities will be halting glass collection by the end of the year as well,” Waste Management said. It added that broken glass is difficult to remove and contaminates a recycling load; but because glass is made from sand, limestone and soda ash, it is safe to send to a landfill with other garbage.

Residents who wish can take glass to recycling centers for Roswell, 11570 Maxwell Road; Smyrna, 3475 Lake Drive; Keep North Fulton Beautiful, 470 Morgan Falls Rd., Sandy Springs; and LiveThrive/Atlanta CHaRM, 1110 Hill St. SE, Atlanta.
