Canton plans budget hearings
The Canton City Council will hold public hearings on its proposed FY 2016 budget later this week and Aug. 20. This week’s hearing is set for 6 p.m.Thursday in the council chambers at Canton City Hall, 151 Elizabeth St.
The proposed general fund budget covering city operations is nearly $13.6 million, up some $243,000 from this year’s $13.34 million. The total proposed budget in all funds stands at roughly $37.80 million, down from this year’s $38.4.
City officials said significant items in the 2016 general fund document include an estimated 10 percent hike in employee health insurance premiums, several proposed new positions in the police, fire and traffic engineering departments, and a number of capital requests including new police vehicles and other gear. Those items total more than $1.6 million.
Officials said the budget was prepared using a millage rate of 5.850, which will not require a tax increase notice.
