The Canton City Council will discuss a significant bridge project at its meeting 6 p.m. Thursday at Canto City Hall, 151 Elizabeth St..

An engineering firm’s fall inspection of the Marietta Street bridge over Canton Creek said that 80-year-old bridge was in “fair” condition, but recommended eventual replacement because it’s outlived its design life. Inspectors also recommended several immediate repairs. including fixing problems with edge beams and the topside of the deck and overlay.

The council will also again take up a controversial proposed intergovernmental agreement with Cherokee County, under which the city would build a new fire station in the Laurel Canyon area and the county would staff and operate it. The council is scheduled to hear from Councilman Bill Grant, head of a committee appointed by Mayor Gene Hobgood to study the issue.
