Canton/Cherokee County fire proposal hits bump

The controversial proposal for a joint city of Canton-Cherokee County fire station was delayed again late last week.

For months, city and county officials have been weighing a proposed intergovernmental agreement under which the city would build a new fire station in the Laurel Canyon area of northwest Canton and the county would staff it, negating the need for the county to build a new station nearby and supposedly saving both the city and county money.

The Canton City Council voted Thursday night to postpone a decision and requested that Canton fire chief Dean Floyd and county fire head Tim Prather work up a five-year strategic plan for their fire service needs, then report back to the council at its Feb. 19 meeting.
