The Canton City Council has approved publishing a tax digest with a millage rate of 5.4 mills, continuing a steady reduction in the rate since 2013.

The millage rate is to be set at the council meeting scheduled for 6 p.m. July 20 at Canton City Hall. The millage is down from 5.6 last year and 5.85 in 2015.

Because of continuing growth in Canton’s net maintenance and operations tax digest – it reached $944.3 million this year – Canton stands to collect nearly 9 percent in net new taxes, even with the reduced millage rate, according to the current 2017 tax digest and five-year history of the levy. About $5.1 million in net taxes are to be levied, up from $4.68 million in 2016.

At a recent council meeting where the fiscal 2018 budget was discussed, staff recommended a rate of 5.422 mills, but council members opted to round that down to 5.4 mills.
