A 22-year-old man is charged with murder after police say he choked his older brother while trying to break up a fight.

Ben Dunwoody is charged with killing his brother, Brian Dunwoody, 25, at their Bremen home.

A group of friends, including the brothers, went to a party and came back to the home early on Nov. 14, Officer Jim Beck with the Haralson County Sheriff’s Office told the AJC.

Brian Dunwoody and Samuel Adam Dean, 23, of Rockmart got in an argument that escalated into a fight, Beck said.

“In an effort to subdue the situation, [Ben Dunwoody] put a choke hold on his brother and the brother went limp,” Beck said. “One witness described it as a wrestling sleeper hold. And they said, ‘He’ll wake up.'”

The group left Brian Dunwoody alone and, “after some period of time,” returned to find his body, Beck said.

The Sheriff’s Office charged Ben Dunwoody with murder, and Dean with battery.

An autopsy found Brian Dunwoody died of asphyxiation, Beck said, though toxicology reports are pending.

Beck added that many details of the case remain to be sorted out.

He said he did not know what prompted the argument between Brian Dunwoody and Dean.
