The Brookhaven Police Department launched “Operation Plugged In” on Thursday, a voluntary program that lets police know where video surveillance cameras are located in the city. The program is an effort to provide police officers with more crime-solving tools. According to Police Chief Gary Yandura, when officers are able to access video recordings of criminal incidents, the department is often able to more efficiently solve crimes and arrest suspects.

“Operation Plugged In is a great tool for us to utilize after a crime has occurred,” Yandura said. “It has already helped us clear up some burglary and auto theft cases.”

The program is a partnership with residents who own video security systems that record public areas. The department is asking businesses and residents to register their cameras online or with the Brookhaven Police Department. Participants will be provided with a small sticker to place on their property to deter crime.
