Two Gwinnett School of Mathematics Science and Technology teachers were named 2017-2018 AP Teacher Appreciation Contest winners. Carden Rice, an AP World and European History teacher, and Greg Field, an AP Calculus teacher, were among a select group of 50 teachers honored by The College Board. Rice and Field also received a $250 prize earmarked for each teacher's classroom.
Tinisha Parker, Gwinnett County Public Schools director of advisement and counseling, is a newly elected member of the American School Counselor Association's Board of Directors. The ASCA is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) professional organization based in Alexandria, Va. that promotes student success by expanding the image and influence of school counseling through leadership, advocacy, collaboration and systemic change.
Teasley Middle School teacher Iona Strougo is a 2018 State-level finalist for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The National awards program recognizes outstanding teaching and leadership in the two subject areas.
Creekview High School's FFA chapter has earned the 3 Star Chapter Award, the highest honor awarded to a chapter by the National FFA Organization. The honor recognizes outstanding FFA chapters that improve operations by following National standards and offering educational programs to grow leaders, build communities and strength agriculture. The Creekview FFA, which is sponsored by teacher Pauline Benton, will be recognized at the National convention in October and by the Cherokee County School Board and Superintendent of Schools at the Sept. 13 School Board meeting. Student leaders are Elhana Kelly, Savanna Duncan, Austin Mitchell, Seth Watkins and Mackenzie Sewell.
Carl Riggs has been named to the Board of Trustees of the Georgia Outdoor Stewardship Trust Fund. Riggs is currently the chairman of the Georgia Council of Trout Unlimited
Emily Fain of Atlanta received the Emerging Leader Award by the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) for her innovative advocacy efforts to help make cancer a national priority. Fain accepted the award yesterday at the organization's Leadership Summit and Lobby Day in Washington, D.C. This annual national award is presented to a state volunteer who has demonstrated a promising start in her role with ACS CAN by taking advantage of new opportunities to advocate for cancer patients.
