The mother of a 6-year-old struck and killed as he darted across the road said Monday that crosswalks may have prevented the boy’s death.
“It’s a problem our city needs to look into because there are several apartment complexes on Old National Highway,” Tamica Bryant told Channel 2 Action News. “Had there been something like that, my baby may still be here.”
Bryant’s son, Christopher Cook Jr., of College Park, died Sunday night when he tried to cross the busy south Fulton County road, just south of Jolly Road, shortly before 7 p.m., according to police.
Fulton County police Cpl. Kay Lester said the boy was standing in the center lane of Old National Highway with his 16-year-old brother, waiting to cross the roadway, when he “broke free from his brother, darted into traffic and was struck by an SUV.”
Investigators believe Christopher was crossing the street to his family’s apartment after getting a haircut at a nearby barber shop when he let go and ran into the path of an coming vehicle. He died at the scene.
Lester said the driver of the vehicle stopped and was not charged. The brothers were not in a crosswalk when Christopher was struck.
A memorial fund has been set up at Wells Fargo in Christopher’s name for those wishing to donate to his family.
