A 12-year-old boy remains in critical condition after being struck by a school bus last week in Polk County.

Wyatt Pilgrim was listed in critical condition at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite on Tuesday night, a hospital spokeswoman said. Pilgrim is a seventh grader at Cedartown Middle School.

Cedartown assistant police chief James Newsome said the boy was waiting for a school bus near his home Wednesday morning when he was struck by another bus near Cherokee Elementary School.

Newsome said the bus was in a traffic lane when it struck the boy.

"The bus skidded to a stop in the middle of the street. The child was in the street also, so that is where it happened," Newsome told The Cedartown Standard.

The bus driver was not identified.

According to the Standard, police said the accident was "unavoidable" and decided not to file charges.

Police could not be reached Tuesday night.
