Thomas Hannah, a graduate of Villa Rica High School in Villa Rica, will represent Georgia as a delegate to the 2012 National Youth Science Camp® (NYSC). Hannah will join 119 other high school graduates representing their states and countries during a four-week program at Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia. The program includes science study along with music, arts and outdoors exploration. Scientists will give lectures on global warming, genomic medicine, radio astronomy, and energy sustainability. Students will also have many hands-on research opportunities. Hannah plans to major in biomedical engineering at Mercer University.

Twenty teachers from Georgia high schools took part an Aerospace STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Institute at the Museum of Aviation at Robins Air Force Base this week. Teachers exchanged ideas, and interacted with other teachers, aerospace industry professionals and visited Aerospace Industry sites that use science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)skills. The goal of the program was to help teachers develop classroom instruction around these topics with real-world applications.

Three Gwinnett County students posted top scores on the 2012 National German Exam, which assesses how well students are acquiring German language skills. Jennifer Shaffer, a rising senior at Collins Hill High School, earned Georgia's top score on the level 3 exam. Another Collins Hill student, Aaron Krask, ranked second on the level 3 exam. Garrett Helmick, also of Collins High, earned second place on the level 2 exam as a sophomore.

Dennis Handy, a student at Gupton Jones College of Funeral Service in Decatur, has won a $1,000 scholarship from The Georgia Funeral Service Practitioners Association. Handy is a native of Athens who lives in Suwanee. He received his B.A. degree in business administration from Paine College in Augusta.
