King's Ridge Christian School sixth-grader Avery Dekshenieks is a state winner in the "If I Were Mayor, I Would" essay contest hosted by the Georgia Municipal Association. As one of 12 state winners, Avery received a $250 savings bond and was honored at Turner Field's 755 Club. Avery is King's Ridge Christian School's second state essay contest winner. The school is in Alpharetta.

St. Pius X Catholic High School freshman Courtney Lonsway of Decatur will compete with her FIRST (For Recognition and Inspiration of Science and Technology) Robotics team at the World Championships in St. Louis. The team won the Rookie All-Star award at the Peachtree Regional Qualifier in March. Courtney is a member of the LINKS Robotics team, which includes students from several schools. LINKS is the Aerospace and Engineering extension to the Science, Engineering, Mathematics and Aerospace Academy at Fernbank Science Center.

Sabrina Grossman, a 6th grade science teacher at The Intown Academy, has been named a regional winner in the National Science Teachers Assocation's Shell Science Lab Challenge. The award is given to teachers who have found innovative ways to give students good lab experiences with limited resources. Grossman is one of 17 regional winners. Five national winners will be chosen and the grand prize winner will win a $20,000 lab makeover. Intown Academy is a charter school located in Atlanta's Old Fourth Ward.

Creekview High School seniors Haley Huskins and Grant Eddy were recognized as nominees for the Vince Dooley Award Scholarship presented by Athletes for a Better World. Haley is a member of the Cherokee school's region champion varsity softball and track teams. She is student government president and yearbook editor. She has a 4.28 grade point average. Grant is a four-year letterman for the wrestling team. He holds every Creekview career and season wrestling record, with 184 career victories. He is a member of the National Honor Society and is the yearbook's sports editor. He has a 4.34 GPA. Both students plan to attend the University of Georgia.

Sixth graders at Woodward North in Johns Creek placed first out of 66 schools in the 2010-2011 Georgia Mathematics League Contest. Vamsi Gadde tied for first in the individual category. The Math League has contests for students in grades 4-8 and for high school students taking Algebra 1 More than a million students from across the United States and Canada take part in the annual contests.
