Creekview High School Beta Club members Lizzie Perrin and Abigail Sherrod took top honors in the statewide Beta Club Scholastic Competition. Lizzie won second place for creative writing; and Abigail won first place for special talent (opera). The Cherokee County students now move to the national competition in North Carolina in June.

Marissa Klee, a seventh grader at Webb Bridge Middle School in Fulton County, launched a book drive that resulted in more than 3,000 books being collected for charity. Marissa's love for reading began at Lake Windward Elementary  so she contacted administrators there to see if she could host a competition among the classes. She placed fliers all over the school and set up collection boxes in every classroom. The reward for collecting the most books: a donut party . The idea for the project was sparked by her preparation for her Bat Mitzvah. The books will be donated to The Drake House, Children's Restoration Network, and North Fulton Community Charities.

Vamsi Gadde, a seventh grader at Woodward Academy, earned a perfect math score of 800, with a total score of 2070 on the SAT for the Duke TIP 7th Grade Talent Search. Vamsi was awarded the Bevan Scholarship to attend summer camp at Duke. Duke TIP's 7th Grade Talent Search is the largest program of its kind in the nation. The 7th Grade Talent Search identifies academically talented students based on their standardized test scores. Candidates are invited to take the ACT or the SAT college entrance exam as 7th graders, giving them more insight on their academic abilities.

Gabriela Martinez, a preschool teacher at Mini Blessings in Suwanee, is one of 52 winners of the 2012 Terri Lynne Lokoff National Child Care Teacher Award. The award recognizes teachers for exemplary early care and education. Martinez was selected from a pool of applicants nationally and will receive a $1,000 award next month in a special ceremony in Philadelphia. In February, Martinez was invited to meet Gov. Nathan Deal and Bobby Cagle, commissioner of the Department of Early Care and Learning at the State Capitol. Her award-winning project is to establish a literacy center with a multicultural focus.
