Andy Yang, a sixth-grader at Wesleyan School, has won several math contests this year, including snagging a fourth place finish out of 250 middle school students in the 2013 South Forsyth War Eagle Middle School Math Tournament. In the November AMC 8 contest, Yang scored a 24 out of 25 and placed third in Georgia, and in the 2013-14 Georgia Math League sixth-grade contest, Yang tied for first in the individual category with a score of 33 out of 35. His AMC 8 score earned him an invitation to the AMC 10, which is designed for ninth and 10th grade students.

School Board member Katie Reeves is the 2014 winner of the Pioneer Award, an honor given annually by the North Fulton Chamber of Commerce to recognize an elected official who has blazed trails for the good of the community. A school board member since 1999, Reeves has been a tireless advocate for traditional math, and was applauded for supporting the school district's move to becoming a charter system.

DeKalb County, in partnership with the DeKalb Chamber of Commerce, the DeKalb School District and the City Schools of Decatur, presented $65,000 in college scholarships to the following students, all of which have been accepted to postsecondary institutions and received up to $5,000 in scholarships: Abhijith Bathini, Alexis Davis, Ashley Lauterbach, Azziza Robinson, Brianna Thompson, Brittanny Thomas-Pearson, Brittany Sears, Elahn Little, Isabella Stork, Jade Zachery, Jazlyn Grier, Jorge Sandoval, Kim An Ta, Krista Williams, Monique Boyd, Naud Bahdurai, Nicholas Rawls, Phat Chang, Saundra Latimer, Thi Thong, Tung Son Do, Victoria Bailey and Vy Huynh.

Marion Sebastian, who is retired but still serves Riverside Elementary students part time, was recently presented with the Georgia Association for Gifted Children's Margaret Bynum Award, which is presented to an organization or individual for an outstanding contribution to gifted education in Georgia.

Amy Myers of Powder Springs Elementary is one of six teachers nationwide who have been named finalists for the 2014 Fishman Prize for Superlative Classroom Practice, a $25,000 award that spotlights excellence in teaching. This year, more than 820 teachers from 46 states and the District of Columbia submitted applications for the prize. Myers was also recently selected by her principal as a "Model Lab Classroom Teacher" for the Cobb County School District, inviting other teachers to visit and observe Myers in order to adopt and implement her practices in their own classrooms.
