The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a contract to upgrade seven northwest Georgia bridges, including three in Bartow County.

GDOT says two bridges on Ga. 20 will be rehabilitated: one over the Etowah River and the other over Ga. 293 and the CSX Railroad. The Ga. 61 bridge over Pettit Creek will also get a fix-up.

Spokesman Mohamed Arafa said in a news release the structural improvements will significantly lengthen the life of seven bridges in Bartow and Floyd counties that date as far back as the late 1920s.

GDOT said the $6.1 million project will finish by March 2017 and will require some lane closures.
