Jim Hutchens, one of five candidates running for mayor of Avondale Estates, has started a petition to stop the city’s annexation proposal from moving through the state legislature.

“This is an effort to delay action until the issue can be studied and better understood by all citizens,” Hutchens said Thursday afternoon.

He said he’s looking for 1,000 signatures on the document he’s posted on www.ipetitions.com., before presenting it to State Representative Karla Drenner, D-Avondale Estates, DeKalb County commissioners and the city’s commission.

Acting Mayor Terry Giager has previously stated he believes the city generally favors annexation, but three candidates in the March 17 special election, including Hutchens, are running on an anti-annexation platform. The city’s proposal, adopted by the commission last month, would nearly double Avondale’s size and population.

“I’d rather Avondale stay like it is,” Hutchens said.
