Mayor Pro Tem Terry Giager said Avondale Estates is considering adding the Clarendon Road/Columbia Drive shopping center anchored by Walmart to its annexation map, which currently includes only two other commercial districts.

A decade ago Walmart’s construction was bitterly contested by Avondale residents, with roughly 70 percent of the city’s registered voters opposing the chain store. But Giager said that with potential annexation bringing in 900 to 1,000 more homes the city needs to strengthen its commercial tax base. He estimates the center could generate $100,000 annually in property taxes.

Commissioners are scheduled to vote on Avondale’s annexation map Dec. 17.
