Avondale Estates is slated to name its brand-new, five-person education committee during its Oct. 26 city commission meeting. Mayor Jonathan Elmore said the committee’s first two priorities include creating a page on the city’s web site clearly outlining school options for city residents and staying updated on DeKalb school board activities and next year’s general assembly.
But Elmore is also intent on re-establishing ties with Avondale Elementary, the city’s only school. During a commission work session last month resident Paul Brown proposed the city donate $5000 to the school’s newly-created after-school program.
Elmore confirmed Thursday that the city can’t give money directly to the school but can assist in other ways. He added that a group headed up by commissioner Randy Bebee is raising funds and that a check of a yet unknown amount may be presented to the school during the Oct. 26 meeting.
