Avondale Estates’ Board of Mayor and Commissioners unanimously approved Mayor Ed Rieker’s resignation Monday night with a 4-0 vote.
Commissioners reiterated they’d received “several hundred” emails from residents asking not to accept the resignation.
“We really [didn’t] have a choice once we received [Rieker’s] resignation,” said mayor pro tem Terry Giager.
The special election for filling Rieker’s term is March 17, with time for qualifying and election costs yet to be announced.
Commissioners Giager and Lindsay Forlines have previously stated they won’t run for the office.
