Austell okays about $9.7M if SPLOST is renewed

If approved by Cobb voters on Nov. 3, SPLOST 2022 in Austell would provide an estimated $9.7 million that would pay for a new recreation center for the city and many other projects. (Courtesy of Austell)
The Austell City Council approved on June 1 almost $9.7 million for city projects that would be funded by the renewed Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) 2022.
That depends on whether Cobb County voters approve this renewal on Nov. 3.
The extra one cent would be added to the sales tax for six more years from 2022 to 2028 when the current SPLOST expires at the end of 2021.
Among the categories are:
- Public Safety for a fire truck, radio upgrades, hand tools, specialized equipment for a truck, new police cars and various equipment at $1.9 million
- Public Works for resurfacing, roadway striping, curb, gutter, sidewalks, roadway drainage systems, maintenance equipment, water infrastructure and system improvements at $3.2 million
- Community Affairs for replacement of the cooling tower at the Threadmill Complex, upgrades/improvements to the city's parks, connectivity of trails and a new recreation center as a joint project with Cobb County at $4.4 million
