U.S. Attorney David Nahmias, recently tapped to be the state’s next Supreme Court justice, announced his resignation Wednesday as the city’s top prosecutor.

Nahmias, 44, was nominated to be U.S. attorney by President George W. Bush and sworn in on Dec. 1, 2004. He said he will resign Sunday.

Gov. Sonny Perdue recently picked Nahmias to fill the state Supreme Court seat vacated by Leah Ward Sears.

Nahmias’ resignation means that all of Georgia’s U.S. attorney positions — in Atlanta, Macon and Savannah — will soon be vacant and need to be filled by President Barack Obama. Max Wood recently resigned as the U.S. attorney in Macon to run for state attorney general. U.S. Attorney Edmund Booth Jr. in Savannah has said he will step down Sept. 3. BILL RANKIN
