The sunny, warm holiday weekend is ending with another beautiful day.
It’s a big change after rain on four consecutive weekends.
The high for Memorial Day will reach a sun-drenched 85 degrees, according to Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz.
The rest of the week looks good as well. Expect clear skies and highs in the mid-80s through Friday, with lows in the mid-60s.
If your holiday plans include a trip to nearby beaches, you can expect sunny skies and highs in the low 80s along the Georgia coast as well for the beaches of the Florida panhandle.
Atlanta’s official rainfall totals the past four weekends, beginning with the last weekend in April, were 1.73 inches, 4.24 inches, .03 inches and .54 inches.
With all that rain, boaters headed to area lakes will find an abundance of water for boats and personal watercraft.
The state Department of Transportation has suspended road construction projects that would shut down interstate lanes for the holiday weekend, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be heavy traffic at times in some areas.
Doug Turnbull in the AM750 and 95.5FM News/Talk WSB Traffic Center warns that traffic will be “extra-slow” on I-75 between Stockbridge and Macon all weekend.
Georgia State Patrol troopers will be out in force, particularly during peak travel times.
“We want to make holiday travel as safe as possible,” Col. Mark W. McDonough, commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Safety said.
The GSP reported that the highest number of Memorial Day holiday weekend fatalities occurred in 2005, when 32 people were killed in highway crashes, while the lowest number was in 1979, when 10 people died. Last year, 16 people died in wrecks across the state.
