Atlanta's pollen count early Thursday remained over 4,000, but help is on the horizon.
"A slow-moving cold front is giving us some great pollen cleanser with scattered showers and a few thundershowers [Thursday night] and [Friday]," Channel 2 Action News chief meteorologist Glenn Burns told the AJC.
Some of Friday's storms could be severe, particularly in the northwest corner of Georgia.
The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center has put northwest Georgia, including the northwest corner of Cobb County, under a slight risk of severe weather on Friday.
There is a 90 percent chance of rain in the metro Atlanta area Friday, with highs in the mid to upper 70s, Burns said.
That rain should bring welcome relief to allergy sufferers who have sneezed and sniffled their way through a week of record-breaking pollen counts.
Thursday's count of 4,379 particles of pollen per cubic meter of air was still well into the extremely high range, but was down from Wednesday's level of 5,174 and less than half of Tuesday's record-shattering count of 9,369.
After Friday's showers, skies should be clear over the weekend, with highs in the low to mid 70s.
