Atlanta officials are investigating an allegation that applicants used fake diplomas or other documents — some of which may have been bought from city employees — to get jobs with the city.

Local television station Fox 5 reported Thursday that fake credentials such as GED diplomas were created by city employees, sold to applicants — including sanitation workers — for as much as $400 and then approved by supervisors. It is not clear how many employees may have been put on the payroll without the required qualifications.

On Friday, the city’s law department told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that the city received a call on its integrity line and the compliance office immediately opened an investigation.

“The city takes the allegations seriously and cannot comment further until the investigation is complete,” the city’s lawyers said.
