Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms has been appointed by the United States Conference of Mayors to be the new Chair of the Community Development and Housing Committee, according to a press release. The committee’s role is critical in helping the conference define its strategy and policy on matters of housing, affordability and economic development.
“I am grateful to my colleagues in the conference for their faith in my leadership to address these important issues that are affecting cities all across the United States,” said Mayor Bottoms. “Our administration has made it a priority to balance growth and equity in all of Atlanta’s diverse communities. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase that work and to offer it as a roadmap for other American cities to follow.”
The announcement was made by Stephen K. Benjamin, the mayor of Columbia, South Carolina and the president of the US Conference of Mayors.
Mayor Bottoms has become a national leader in the ongoing struggle to protect vulnerable neighborhoods and longtime residents from being displaced by accelerating development. She has demonstrated a keen ability to find creative solutions and to build effective public-private partnerships, which include her billion-dollar affordability initiative to protect and provide housing for seniors and low-income residents.
