An Atlanta man was convicted of felony murder for torturing and beating to death his 4-year-old son.
Marcos Cordero also was found guilty of aggravated assault and cruelty to children after beating 4-year-old Marc Estephano Sanchez Mendez on Jan. 18, 2008. Mendez was taken to Piedmont Hospital to be treated for severe injuries. He was pronounced dead at the hospital, the Fulton County District Attorney’s office said.
The child’s mother, Sabina Mendez, told a Fulton County jury that her husband had beaten him with objects that included a broom, a plunger and shoes, the district attorney’s office said.
In exchange for testifying against her husband, Sabina Mendez pleaded guilty to first degree cruelty for not getting help for her son, the district attorney’s office said.
Cordero and Sabina Mendez are scheduled to be sentenced on April 11 before Fulton County Superior Court Judge Kimberly Esmond Adams.
