The Atlanta City Council has authorized up to $30 million in purchases of potentially hundreds of police vehicles from three auto dealers over the next five years.

Taking advantage of a statewide purchasing contract previously negotiated by the Georgia Department of Administrative Services for police pursuit and special service vehicles, the Council on Tuesday passed resolutions authorizing the mayor to enter into cooperative purchasing agreements with Akin Ford-Dodge-Chrysler-Jeep, Hardy Chevrolet and Wade Ford.

The agreements would run five years, with four one-year renewal options. Each dealer would deliver vehicles, repair parts and other services valued at up to $2 million per year, not to exceed $10 million over the entire contract period.

Police pursuit models available to the city include the Chevrolet Impala, Caprice and Tahoe; Dodge Charger; and Ford Pursuit Sedan and Pursuit Utility vehicle. With options for V6 and V8 engines, 10 variations of these models are offered.
