A 78-year-old Athens man has been arrested for allegedly killing a Waffle House waitress found dead last week along an Oconee County road.

The Oconee County Sheriff’s Office Saturday afternoon announced the arrest of Talmadge Edward Powell. Powell was booked into the county jail just after 9 a.m. Saturday, charged with murder.

“We will provide more detail shortly,” the sheriff’s office posted on it’s Facebook page.

The sheriff’s office on Thursday identified the woman as Misty Michelle Myrick, 38, of neighboring Oglethorpe County.

Myrick’s body was found Tuesday along Simonton Bridge Road.

“The crime lab has determined that the death is a homicide,” the sheriff’s office posted on Facebook.

Investigators have not said how Myrick died, or released a motive for her death.

The Athens Banner-Herald reported that Myrick had worked at several Waffle House restaurants in the Athens area.
