2 arrested for holding cop at gunpoint
While duct taped inside his home, an East Point police officer was able to call 911 to report two masked men had robbed him at gunpoint.
The information the bound officer was able to give police led to the suspects' capture a short time later, the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said. The officer suffered a minor injury to his head during the home invasion, but was able to free his hands to get to the phone.
Shortly after 10 p.m. on Jan. 10, deputies arrived at the cop's home in north Fayette County, Investigator Brent Rowan said. The victim, whose name was not released, told deputies that the masked men bound his hands and feet with duct tape and then stole a flat screen television, handgun and other electronics.
At 10:19 p.m., a Fayetteville police officer on Highway 54 near Burch Road saw a small car with two men inside that matched the description of those involved in the home invasion, Rowan said. The car tried to elude the officer and a short pursuit led to Chase Drive, where the officer was able to stop the car.
Items taken during the home invasion were found in the car, along with the mask and gun allegedly used in the crime, police said.
The two suspects, Clifton Jerome Scott, 21, and Brandon Christopher Herston, 21, both of Fayetteville, have been charged with armed robbery, burglary, false imprisonment and aggravated assault, police said. Scott also was charged with numerous traffic-related offenses. Both are being held without bond in the Fayette County Jail.
Anyone with information on this incident or similar crimes is asked to contact Detective E. Harper at the Fayette County Sheriff Office 770-716-4763 or eharper@fayettecountyga.gov.
