Appeals for Harmony Leland Elementary replacement receive no response
Five parents and a student from Harmony Leland Elementary School in Mableton made another in a series of appeals Thursday to Cobb Board of Education members to rebuild their school.
Broderick Santiago, parent and a pastor, appealed to the school officials to “take a personal tour there to see the deplorable conditions for yourself.”
Speakers said those conditions include flooding, “lots of mold and dirt,” mildew, sewer backups, cockroaches, rats, ants and stinkbugs.
Overpopulation leads to meals being served all day and one-third of the students in classroom trailers.
No responses were given by any of the board members or by Superintendent Chris Ragsdale.
However, board members voted 7-0 to approve Gilbane Building Company of Atlanta as the contractor for the Walton High School rebuild.
The company will receive $48 million for Stage 1’s site work and classroom building.
Construction will begin immediately, and Stage 2 construction will begin in 18 to 20 months.
