An ammonia leak from a baking plant closed DeKalb Avenue in Atlanta for several hours early Tuesday morning.
Atlanta firefighters responded a report of an odor at the Edwards Baking Company on Lemon Lane N.E., at 1 a.m. Tuesday, according to Fire Department spokesman Capt. Jolyon Bundridge. Firefighters reported smelling ammonia in the area and found employees evacuating the pie-making plant.
Firefighters determined that a refrigeration unit was leaking an ammonia-based refrigerant, Bundridge said. He said the ammonia leak posed no threat to the areas near the plant, and residential evacuations were not required.
A private cleaning contractor that specializes in hazardous materials spills was dispatched to the plant, which was closed until further notice, Bundridge said.
Atlanta police closed DeKalb Avenue at Whitefoord Avenue and Arizona Avenue. The roads were reopened after 6 a.m.
